So, in this article, I will make sure that I bring to your understanding everything you need to know when applying or Reapplying for an international passport in Nigeria.

Before we start with the application steps, let’s take a look at what an International passport is.

What is an International Passport?

In general understanding and for the clarity of all, I will say that “An International passport is a small booklet that contains the holder’s name, place of birth, date of birth, date of issue, date of expiry, passport number, photo, and signature. There are different types of passports, depending on the status of the passport holder in their home country.

The international passport serves as a travel document issued by the government of the country that you are a citizen to verify your identity and nationality whenever you want to travel out of the country.

Nevertheless, you have to know that there are five different types of International passports namely;

  • Ordinary Passport
  • Collective Passport
  • ePassport
  • Official passport

ePassport

Otherwise, known as an electronic passport, the e-passport is a regular booklet that has an electronic chip on the cover.

The contents of the electronic chip are usually the passport holder’s information and also provide an extra layer of security against passport fraud.

Emergency passport

This type of passport is also known as a temporary passport which is usually issued when you lost your passport or had it stolen, and you don’t have time to apply for a new one.

Ordinary Passport

The ordinary passport is the type of passport that is mostly issued to citizens of a country for tourist purposes outside their country of residence.

However, this type of passport is only valid for a period of 10 years.

Collective Passport

This type of passport is usually issued to a group, such as a company that is sending their group of staff for training abroad, tour groups travelling abroad together, or even school children that are going for an international excursion.

Official passport

This passport is only issued to government employees. With this passport, the official of the other country that the person is visiting will know that the passport holder is entering the country on official business or officially representing their country.

Required Documents

For people above 18 years, the following are the document that will be required from them.

  • Citizens by birth should provide their National ID card or a letter of identification.
  • Citizens by naturalization/registration must provide their Certificate of Naturalization/Registration.
  • Complete special form design for the international passport
  • Two standard passport-sized photographs validated by the guarantor.
  • A copy of the guarantor’s passport issued in Nigeria
  • A guarantor’s form filled in and also signed by Oaths’ Commissioner.
  • Married applications should provide their official status certificate.
  • Age Declaration or Certificate of birth.
  • Proof of payment.

If the applicant is below age 18, the needed document will be;

  • Standard passport-sized photograph signed by one or both parents.
  • An application form that contains all the required information.
  • The proof of the child’s parents being citizens of Nigeria.
  • A birth certificate.
  • Proof of payment.
  • Letter of consent.
  • Court Order document (if the parents are unavailable).

How to Apply for an International Passport

To apply for your international passport online, the first thing to do is to visit the NIS portal – https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/

When you are on the page, select the passport type and the passport processing country.

After that, you will have to complete the Application form and then upload the scanned copies of all the required documents.

After uploading the documents, proceed to select your preferred payment method and once you’ve completed the payment, click “Submit”. N/B: payment can be made with Visa cards

On finishing with the above-listed proceedings, an Application ID and Reference number will be issued to you.

Go and print out your guarantor’s form and have it certified.

Then submit the completed application form with additional required documents in person at your selected passport office.

Is There Any Other Way to Apply for This?

The answer to this question is “YES”, and this is done through an Agent. But you have to know that using this option will take a more extended period of time.
