What is ICAN?
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) was founded by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1965 to govern the practise of accounting in Nigeria and to establish criteria for those seeking admission to the profession.
It was intended to create and manage the register of associates, fellows, and accountants, as well as to define the abilities and knowledge needed to become an accountant.
It has developed into a sizable community of accountants throughout the years, having certified over 38 thousand chartered accountants working in a variety of sectors of the economy.

ICAN Exams
ICAN Nigeria provides two distinct examinations. The first kind is intended for holders of bachelor’s degrees or higher national diplomas in any field, as well as holders of the ICAN AAT certificate.
The second category of examinations is the Accounting Technician Scheme examinations. This one is for students who have earned five Ordinary Level credits (including mathematics and English) in two or fewer sittings.

Steps to Register for the ICAN Examination 2023
ICAN offers two examination types:
- The professional examinations, which are meant for bachelor’s degree holders and graduates with a Higher National Diploma (HND) in any discipline,
- Holders of the Association of Accounting Technicians qualification
To register for the ICAN this year, follow these steps:
- Head to any commercial bank across the country. Use Pay Direct to pay for the examination registration fee which costs 7,000 Naira (minus bank charges). Payment can also be made via ICAN official website.
- When you have successfully completed the payment transaction, visit the website found on your receipt and begin your registration.
- It is expected that you get a coloured passport photograph of yourself.
- Upload your passport and include it in the registration form. Ensure you print and sign the form.
- Include a referee or chartered accountant sponsor and include their name, membership number, and phone number.
- Certify your registration form by taking your completed registration form to your sponsor or referee. For those with the Association of Accounting Technicians qualification results, you’ll be required to pay 23,500 Naira for the conference and induction; ensure you include the receipt in your application.
- You will also be required to attach two certified passport photograph copies, the original pay direct receipt, and a pin voucher.
