Year in year out there usually thousands of people who seat for JAMB examinations in different locations in Nigeria.
Unfortunately, say twenty out of the hundred percent that apply the exams usually do not make it the admission may be due to a low JAMB score or a low post UTME score.
However, provisions have been made by the Federal government to proffer the solution to the masses who could not get into school (either into a university or a polytechnic).
This provision was the establishment of a body known as the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
By this intervention, school leavers whose cut-off marks could not earn them admission into their preferred tertiary institution of study, stood a chance of still engaging in serious academic activities.
Several study centres were established by the Federal government, some of which are; college pf health science and technology; vocational enterprise institutes of Nigeria; mon-technics; etc.
The existence of the NBTE system has overtime enhanced the establishment of various vocational enterprise institutes in the nation and the students have equally been groomed to be skillful.

Requirement For the Admission into NBTE
Just as other tertiary institutions have their own laid down requirements respectively NBTE is not an exception.
Candidates who wish to apply for any of the vocational enterprise institutions in Nigeria are expected to have at least five credits in WAEC (West African Examination Council) or NECO (National Examination Council).
Most of the NBTE schools do not require JAMB results and so, they do not set any cut-off mark.
NBTE Accredited and Approved Vocational Enterprise Institutions in Nigeria FAQ
What are the objectives of Vocational Enterprise Institutions in Nigeria?
The Federal Ministry of Education opted to allow the creation of private sector VEIs and IEIs due to a shortage of resources in academic institutions to handle the large number of high school graduates and low private sector involvement in skill acquisition.
The main goal is to increase exposure to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in order to meet the demands of industry while also empowering citizens.
What are the target groups of vocational enterprise institutions?
The VEIs and IEIs are intended to provide a reasonable alternative form of education that will address the following needs:
- School graduates who want to develop proven practical skills in order to find or create jobs
- People looking for jobs that don’t require a university education
- People who don’t have the time to devote to full-time school yet wish to improve their skills
- Those that want to start their own business
- Adults looking for possibilities to re-skill themselves and university grads looking for employable skills
Conclusion
The Federal Government of Nigeria has recognised Vocational Enterprise Institutions (VEIs) & Innovation Enterprise Institutions (IEIs) as a credible alternative to university education.
They are the result of the Federal Ministry of Education’s (FME) ongoing educational reform programmes.
These are non-government establishments that will provide post-secondary and tertiary occupational, specialised, technology, or professional training and education to empower secondary school graduates and young adults with career-related skills and expertise to satisfy the nation’s growing demands for a technical workforce in various sectors.
