What Happened to TStv

TStv launched in 2017 as a cheaper rival to DStv. It promised pay-as-you-watch billing, a free data bundle, and over 100 channels for a fraction of MultiChoice prices. Service ran on and off for years, then went dark in March 2023. Customers reported blank screens and no support response. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission later filed a N380 million case linked to the company. Founder Bright Echefu moved on and announced a new pay-TV brand in late 2024.

If you still own a TStv decoder, it currently has no signal to receive. The hardware cannot pair with another provider’s broadcast.

TStv Subscription Plans (Historical)

TStv ran a pay-as-you-watch model. You paid for the days you used, paused when you traveled, and got a small data bundle with each plan. These are the last published prices before the shutdown:

PlanPriceDurationFree Data
Daily₦20024 hours500 MB
Weekly₦7507 days2 GB
10-Day₦1,00010 days3 GB
Bi-Weekly₦1,50014 days5 GB
Monthly₦3,00030 days10 GB

Per-channel rates ran from ₦3 to ₦5 a day, so a viewer who only watched one or two channels could spend less than the daily plan. Subscribers could pause an active plan for up to 7 days.

TStv Decoder Price

The TStv Africa Smart Satellite decoder sold for ₦12,000 to ₦15,000 at retail. Installation added ₦2,000 to ₦5,000 depending on the technician and your roof setup. The hardware is no longer worth buying because the broadcast signal is off.

TStv vs DStv, GOtv, and StarTimes

TStv tried to undercut the big three on price. Here is how the four services compared at TStv’s peak, plus where each stands today:

ServiceStatusCheapest PlanTop PlanChannel CountBilling Model
TStvOff-air since 2023₦200 / day₦3,000 / month~100Pay-as-you-watch
DStvActive₦2,500 (Padi)₦44,500 (Premium)175+Fixed monthly
GOtvActive₦1,900 (Smallie)₦9,500 (Supa+)90+Fixed monthly
StarTimesActive₦2,200 (Nova)₦8,800 (Super)120+Daily/weekly/monthly

DStv and GOtv hold the rights to the English Premier League and UEFA tournaments, which TStv could never match. StarTimes carries NTA federal and state stations, giving it the deepest local-news lineup. TStv’s edge was flexible billing — that advantage is gone now that the service is off.

Live Alternatives to TStv

If you came here looking to subscribe today, pick one of these working services:

  • DStv — widest channel range, premium sports, highest price
  • GOtv — MultiChoice’s budget brand, shares some DStv content
  • StarTimes — strong local content through its NTA partnership
  • Strong Decoder — free-to-air option with no monthly fee
  • Showmax or Netflix — streaming alternatives if you have stable internet
