Both universities that adhere to the National Union’s (ASUU) directives and those that do not are present and functioning in Nigeria.
The lack of reliance on government funding for salaries and other operating expenses has led to the majority of these universities being privately owned.
There is simply no rationale for them to be associated with ASUU or take part in any of their strike actions.
Before now, the University of Nigeria, NSUKKA and the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN were the only federal owned University that was not part of ASUU but as of 2019 the tables turned and now they are part of ASUU, so you will not have even one Federal University not partaking in the strike when the whistle for Strike action is blown.
List of Universities Not Under ASUU in Nigeria
Currently in Nigeria, the Association of Senior University Teachers (ASUUT) represents all federal universities.
Delta State University (also known as DELSU) is the only State University that is not part of ASUU. Delta State University (DELSU) is a government-funded institution of higher education in Nigeria that is currently experiencing no disruptions due to a strike.
Academic life at DELSU (Delta State University) is back to normal after initially participating in the strike for four weeks.

What is ASUU?
To clarify, “ASUU” stands for “Academic Staff Union of Universities,” and as the name suggests, it is a body for all academic staff in the University; however, you will notice that each University has something akin to a local Union of Academic Staff (We call this, University’s Chapter of ASUU), and this is what they mean when they refer to “UNIBEN ASUU” or “UI ASUU,” respectively.
When Will ASUU Strike Be Called Off?
There is no hard and fast rule about when a strike should be ended, but it always ends when its stated goal has been accomplished. If you want to know the status of the strike’s end, you can check back here, bookmark this page, or follow us on any of our social media channels.
Why Does ASUU Always Go On Strike?
In 1999, ASUU and the federal government reached an agreement, but the union claims that the government still hasn’t properly responded to it. This is why we have had a string of strikes in different places over the years.
