How to Enrol for BVN Registration Outside Nigeria

Updated14 August 2026
Reading time5 minutes

You no longer need to travel to get a Nigerian BVN abroad. Since 13 May 2025, the CBN’s NRBVN platform (nrbvn.com) lets Nigerians in the diaspora complete BVN enrollment fully online: upload your documents, pass a video liveness check, pay a $50 processing fee, and receive your BVN within 72 hours of approval. The old route — an appointment at a VFS Global centre — still exists in four cities at £30, but it is now the fallback, not the main path.

BVN registration outside Nigeria without travelling - NRBVN online enrollment: apply at nrbvn.com, $50 fee, BVN within 72 hours

This guide covers the online NRBVN process step by step, who qualifies, the documents you need, and the remaining in-person option. Every fact was checked in August 2026 against NIBSS and VFS Global’s official pages.

The big change: BVN enrollment is now online

For a decade, getting a BVN abroad meant flying to an enrollment centre. That ended on 13 May 2025, when the Central Bank of Nigeria and NIBSS launched the Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) platform. Biometric capture and know-your-customer checks now happen remotely — your phone camera handles the liveness check that used to require a fingerprint scanner in an office.

The $50 charge (about ₦80,000) is what the CBN calls a recoverable processing cost for the remote verification, not a fee for the number itself. Inside Nigeria, BVN enrollment at any bank branch remains free.

Who can use NRBVN?

  • Nigerians living abroad without a BVN — the main audience.
  • Nigerians abroad who already have a NIN but never enrolled for a BVN.
  • Nigerians by descent — you qualify with evidence that either parent is a Nigerian citizen, even if you have never lived in Nigeria.
  • Non-Nigerian directors of Nigerian companies — after pre-registration with a local bank.

How to apply for your BVN online (step by step)

  1. Go to nrbvn.com (the official portal — NIBSS links it from nibss-plc.com.ng/nrbvn) and create an account.
  2. Fill in your biodata exactly as it appears on your ID.
  3. Upload your identification and KYC documents (list below).
  4. Complete the liveness check — a short guided video selfie that replaces in-person biometrics.
  5. Pay the $50 processing fee with a Visa or Mastercard.
  6. Once your documents pass validation and screening, your BVN arrives within 72 hours.

Documents you need

  • A valid ID — international passport or national ID card.
  • Proof of residency in your country — a utility bill, lease agreement, or government-issued document.
  • Work ID or an employment confirmation letter.
  • A reference letter from a recognised financial institution, where applicable.
  • Proof of income or tax documents — optional, but they speed up screening.

What the BVN unlocks once you have it

The point of NRBVN is not the number — it is what banks let you do with it from abroad: open naira accounts and domiciliary accounts in USD, GBP or EUR remotely, send remittances through formal channels at better effective rates, and access Nigerian investment products without flying home. Pair it with our dollar-to-naira rate tracker when moving money.

Prefer in-person? The VFS Global option

VFS Global still runs BVN enrollment for NIBSS, but the network has shrunk to four cities. The fee is £30, paid in local currency at the centre (Melbourne AU$68 by card, Auckland NZ$54 by EFTPOS, Mumbai ₹3,450 cash).

Centre Address Hours / booking
Melbourne, Australia Suite 4, Level 12, 55 Swanston Street, Melbourne VIC 3000 Mon–Fri 9:00–15:00, by appointment (+612 9252 1152)
Auckland, New Zealand 87-89 Albert Street, Ground Level, Suite 2, Auckland 1010 Mon–Fri 10:30–16:30 — book by phone (+64 9 369 5669) or email
Mumbai, India Urmi Axis Building, 3rd Floor, Opp. E Moses Road Mon–Fri 9:00–17:00, walk-in, no appointment
Cape Town, South Africa Listed in VFS’s centre picker — email bvninfosa@vfsglobal.com to confirm the current address before visiting —

If you saved an older version of this guide: the centres in Toronto, San Francisco, Manchester, Jeddah, Al Khobar and São Paulo no longer appear on VFS Global’s site. Do not travel to those addresses — use NRBVN online instead.

April 2026 BVN rule changes worth knowing

Two CBN changes took effect on 1 May 2026 and apply to every BVN holder, at home or abroad:

  • One phone-number change, ever. The phone number tied to your BVN can now be changed only once in a lifetime — a defence against SIM-swap fraud. Pick the number you register through NRBVN carefully.
  • 24-hour watchlist checks. Accounts flagged for suspicious activity face temporary restrictions while banks verify the transactions within 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a BVN without visiting Nigeria or a centre?

Yes. Since May 2025, NRBVN handles the whole process online — documents, liveness check and payment. Older guides (including earlier versions of this one) that say BVN enrollment cannot be completed online are describing the pre-2025 system.

How much does BVN registration cost abroad?

$50 online through NRBVN, or £30 (local equivalent) at a VFS centre. Inside Nigeria, enrollment at any bank branch is free.

How long does it take?

NIBSS issues the BVN within 72 hours of your application passing validation. VFS centre enrollments follow the standard 24–48-hour processing after capture.

I was born abroad to Nigerian parents — can I get a BVN?

Yes. NRBVN accepts Nigerians by descent: provide evidence that either of your parents is a Nigerian citizen.

Can I have two BVNs?

No. One BVN links all your Nigerian bank accounts for life. If you enrolled years ago and forgot the number, recover it through your Nigerian bank rather than enrolling again.

Can I open a Nigerian bank account with my NRBVN?

Yes — that is the point. Banks can open naira and domiciliary (USD/GBP/EUR) accounts for you remotely once the BVN checks out.
