Bachelor’s Degree Abbreviations and Meaning

A bachelor’s degree is derived from the Latin ‘baccalaureatus’. It is an undergraduate academic degree usually awarded by universities and colleges.

This award is usually issued upon completion of a course of study, which could last between three to seven years, depending on the academic discipline and institution.

In the 12th century, the term bachelor was referred to as a young, poor knight bachelor who gathers vassals under his banner.

By the end of the 13th century, the use of the term took a different turn as junior members of guilds or universities.

By folk etymology or wordplay, the word baccalaureus came to be associated with bacca lauri, which is “laurel berry” about laurels being awarded for academic success honours.

In countries that are under the British system, undergraduate academic degrees are categorized into honours degrees and Non-honors degrees.

Non-honour degrees are generally known as pass degrees, ordinary degrees, or general degrees, while an honours degree generally requires a higher academic standard than a pass degree.

Some countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, and Canada, have a postgraduate, a “bachelor with honors” degree.

This may be taken as a consecutive academic degree. It is a continuation from the completion of a bachelor’s degree program either in the same field or as part of an integrated honours program.

These kinds of programs typically require the completion of a full-year-long research thesis project. After this, one can decide to head on to the ‘master’s degree’ and, if possible, the ‘doctorate degree.’
