Is NABTEB Internationally Recognized?

I know for sure that you might have been surfing the web for quite a while to check if the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, NABTEB, has international recognition in the world educational sector.

I understand that NABTEB is a programme that was mainly meant to certify trade and crafts in students. However, JAMB certified NABTEB as one of the prerequisites for gaining admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

You also have to know there are two types of NABTEB, namely:

  • O’ Level NABTEB
  • A’ Level NABTEB

O’ Level NABTEB: The Ordinary Level NABTEB (O’Level) is the type in which students combine with JAMB to gain admission into 100-level universities. Hence, the O’Level NABTEB has the same authority as WAEC, NECO, and GCE variants.

This is commonly found in secondary school leavers who must sit for another O-level examination to complete their O’ Level courses. This examination registration can run between N13,000 to N35,000, depending on your location and study centres.

A’ Level NABTEB: Unlike the O’ Level NABTEB, the  Advanced Level NABTEB (A’ Level NABTEB) is a program designed to cater to those seeking admission into Nigerian universities who have not been able to do so through JAMB. NABTEB A Level serves as an alternative route to JAMB.

Attending lectures in any of the approved NABTEB A Level Studies and passing will enable you to combine the result with the Direct Entry form and use it to gain admission into the 200 level. The best thing is that you can study almost all the courses in Nigerian universities with this programme.

Does NABTEB have international recognition?

NABTEB, an internal examination body, unlike WAEC, which has an international weight behind it, was set up to reduce the burden of WAEC.

Many students ask if NABTEB can be used to study outside the country’s shores. The answer is yes; NABTEB has international recognition. NABTEB can be used to gain admission to study at a few universities abroad, but not all universities and colleges outside Nigeria accept it. Some universities abroad base their admission on whether aspiring students have passed the required subject, while other universities check recognised national examination bodies and specify it in their admission procedure. The universities that belong to the latter may disqualify candidates with NABTEB if they accept only Waec and Neco.

The truth is that the NABTEB result alone does not guarantee one’s chances of clinching admission abroad. First and foremost, candidates who have NABtTEB results and intend to study abroad must write a test of English language proficiency, such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or CAE (Cambridge Assessment English). Other examinations prospective candidates who plan to study abroad may be expected to write include standardised tests, the ACT (American College Test), and even the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). These examinations determine how fluent a candidate is in the English language.

Most universities and colleges abroad have requirements that every international student must fulfil before admission. This differs from the question of whether your O’level result is recognised or not. A test of English proficiency is one of the criteria needed to be fulfilled.

After gathering the necessary documents, research and find your desired institution choice, select a course of study and apply. The application process will involve the submission of all essential documents and paying application fees before an admission application or request is considered.
