Acronym For The 1st 20 Elements

The easiest mnemonic for the first 20 elements is: “He has light brain but cannot offer full nine subjects. Must all silly people stop calling a pope Christ?” Each word stands for one element, in order from hydrogen to calcium.

Read the first letter (or sound) of each word and match it to the element below.

Two symbols don’t match their English names: sodium is Na (from the Latin natrium) and potassium is K (from kalium). Learn those two by heart.

Hydrogen (H), Helium (He), Lithium (Li), Beryllium (Be), Boron (B), Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), Oxygen (O), Fluorine (F), Neon (Ne), Sodium (Na), Magnesium (Mg), Aluminium (Al), Silicon (Si), Phosphorus (P), Sulphur (S), Chlorine (Cl), Argon (Ar), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca).

Prefer a shorter phrase? Many students split it in two and learn ten at a time:

  • 1–10: “Happy Henry Lives Beside Boron Cottage, Near Our Friend Neon.”
  • 11–20: “Naughty Magpies Always Sing Perfect Songs, Clara And Karl Clap.”

Pick the one that sticks, then write it out from memory a few times until you can recall all 20 without looking.

How to memorise them faster

  • Say the mnemonic out loud — sound helps memory more than reading silently.
  • Write the 20 symbols in order, then check them against the list above.
  • Test yourself backwards (calcium to hydrogen) once you can do it forwards.
  • Group by row: elements 3–10 sit on period 2, and 11–18 on period 3 of the periodic table.
