Nigerian Army DSSC Recruitment: How to Apply (DSSC 29)

The Nigerian Army Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) lets graduates join the Army as officers without going through the Defence Academy’s five-year cadet route. The current cycle is DSSC Course 29/2026. Applications opened on 7 January 2026 and closed on 4 February 2026, free of charge, through the official portal at recruitment.army.mil.ng. You apply, sit a screening, then go through written tests, interviews, and a medical before commissioning.

What is the Nigerian Army DSSC?

DSSC stands for Direct Short Service Commission. The Army uses it to bring in graduates with skills it needs — doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants, IT specialists, chaplains and imams — and commission them as officers after a shorter cadet course at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Jaji.

An initial commission runs for 8 years and can be renewed for 7 more, for a total of 15 years. Conversion to a Regular Commission may be granted after 3 years as a commissioned officer, subject to vacancies. Cadets graduate as Lieutenants. Medical consultants graduate as Majors.

Who can apply for DSSC Course 29/2026?

The Army set these baseline rules for the 29/2026 intake:

Nigerian citizen by birth.
Aged 20 to 32 years on 30 March 2026 (up to 40 years for medical consultants).
Medically, mentally and physically fit by Nigerian Army standards.
Minimum height: 1.68 m (men), 1.65 m (women).
No criminal conviction, no cult or secret society membership, no tattoos or body inscriptions.
Good character, attested to by at least two referees.
Academic certificates obtained between 2011 and 2025.
At least a Second Class Lower (B.Sc/B.A/B.Eng) or Lower Credit (HND) from a recognised institution.
NYSC discharge or exemption certificate.
Certificate of state of origin.

Postgraduate qualifications and professional registration (where required) push the age cap higher for some corps. Medical consultants must hold current practising licences.

Which corps are recruiting under DSSC 29/2026?

The Army opened vacancies in selected corps. Confirmed for this cycle:

The recruitment notice typically also covers Supply and Transport, Military Police, Physical Training, Public Relations, Chaplain Services (Protestant and Catholic) and Islamic Affairs in years they have gaps. Common degree requirements by corps

Supply and Transport: Food Tech, Business Admin, Economics, Marketing, Catering and Hotel Management, or Shipping and Supply Chain Management.
Signals: Telecommunications, Satellite Communication, Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems.
Electrical, Mechanical, Aeronautical Engineering: B.Eng or HND in the matching field (Aeronautical needs 3+ years’ experience; Mechanical needs 2+).
Physical Training: Physical and Health Education, Sports Administration (PGD), Human Kinetics, Sport Coaching, Physiotherapy or Sports Psychology.
Military Police: Sociology, Psychology or Criminology.
Public Relations: Mass Comm, Journalism, Graphic Design, Advertising or Broadcasting — plus membership in a relevant professional body.
Chaplain (Protestant): B.A in Theology, Pastoral Counselling or Child Evangelism from a seminary recognised by the NA Directorate of Chaplain Services.
Islamic Affairs: B.A or B.Ed in Arabic and Islamic Studies, or LLB Sharia with an Arabic diploma from Al-Azhar (Cairo) or a Saudi university. Must be fluent in English.
Fire Fighter: B.Sc Chemistry or Physics plus NCAA-approved Fire Fighting Licence.
Air Traffic Controller: B.Sc Geography, Physics or Mathematics plus NCAA-approved ATC Licence.

How do you apply for DSSC 29/2026?

Applications are online and free. Follow these steps inside the application window:

Go to recruitment.army.mil.ng.
Click Register and create an account with a valid email and phone number.
Check your email for the confirmation message from the Nigerian Army and verify your account.
Log in and select the DSSC application type.
Fill the biodata section. Upload a clear passport photograph.
Add your academic qualifications — WAEC/NECO/NABTEB plus degree/HND results.
Upload scanned copies of your certificates, NYSC document and state-of-origin certificate.
Submit, then download and print your photo-card and acknowledgement slip.

Two pages of the printout need signatures:

Page 1: signed by a Commissioner for Oaths or a magistrate.
Page 2: signed by your Local Government Chairman or Secretary, or a military officer at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel or above from your state of origin.

Multiple applications disqualify you. Apply once.

What documents do you need?

Passport photograph (recent, on white background).
O’level result (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or GCE).
Degree or HND certificate and transcript.
NYSC discharge or exemption certificate.
Birth certificate or sworn age declaration.
Certificate of state of origin.
Evidence of membership of any required professional body.
Two letters of attestation from referees (LG Chairman/Secretary, an officer above the rank of Major, or an Assistant Commissioner of Police from your state). Each letter must carry the referee’s passport photograph.

Serving military personnel add a valid military ID, a Commanding Officer’s recommendation, the Army’s sponsorship letter for their course, and proof of 5+ years’ service in the unit.

What are the stages after applying?

Online shortlisting. The Military Secretary’s office screens applications and posts the names of candidates invited for the next stage on the portal.
State screening. Shortlisted candidates report to their state’s screening centre with original documents and PT kit.
Written examination. Aptitude paper covering current affairs, English, general knowledge and basic maths.
Interview and medical. Successful candidates face an interview panel and a full medical examination at a military hospital.
Letter of induction. Final list of inductees gets called up to begin cadet training.

What should you bring to the screening centre?

How long does the commission last?

Initial term: 8 years.
Renewal: 7 more years, taking total service to 15.
Conversion to Regular Commission: possible after 3 years as an officer, subject to vacancy and performance.
Graduation rank: Lieutenant. Medical Consultants graduate as Major.

What goes wrong (and how to fix it)?

Portal rejects upload: file is over the size limit. Compress your scans to under 1 MB before retrying.
“Age out of range” error: the portal calculates age against the cycle’s cut-off date. Double-check your date of birth field — it must match your birth certificate exactly.
No referee letterhead: use plain letterhead with the referee’s stamp and a passport photo glued in. Letters without referee photographs get tossed.
Missing NYSC certificate: if you’re a current corps member, request a confirmation letter from your NYSC State Coordinator. Awaiting-result applications are rejected.

How do you check if the next DSSC cycle is open?

The Army runs DSSC roughly once a year. Watch three places between November and February each year:
