What does the Nigeria Customs Service do?
The NCS was set up in 1891 and runs four main lines of work:
- Collect import duties, excise duties and other levies, and account for the revenue.
- Stop smuggling at ports, airports and land borders.
- Process manifests and clear declarations at ports of entry.
- License Customs agents and work with sister agencies on trade and security.
What are the available NCS positions and entry requirements?
Recruitment runs in three cadres. Match your highest qualification to the right one — applying above your level is a fast track to disqualification.
Customs Assistant cadre (CONSOL 03 – 04)
Entry-level officers in support and general-duty roles. Two tracks:
- Support staff: First School Leaving Certificate, Junior Secondary School Certificate or an approved Trade Test certificate. Eligible trades include accounts, audit, band, building, photography, clerical, communications, driving, electrical, health/medical assistance, marine, mechanical, sports, stores and tailoring.
- General duty: SSCE/NECO or GCE with credits in at least three subjects including English and Maths at one sitting, or passes in four subjects (including English and Maths) at one sitting.
Assistant Inspector cadre (CONSOL 06)
Mid-level officers. OND, NCE or equivalent from a recognised polytechnic or college of education. Support-staff fields include accounts, audit, building, ICT, nursing, nutrition/dietary, electrical engineering, health information management, medical lab technology, pharmaceutical technology, marine and secretarial studies. General-duty applicants need OND/NCE in any field.
Superintendent cadre — ASC II (CONSOL 08)
Senior ranking officers. Bachelor’s degree or HND plus a valid NYSC discharge or exemption certificate. Relevant fields include accounts, actuarial science, audit, building, communications, electrical and mechanical engineering, health information management, marine, nursing, nutrition, quantity surveying, secretarial studies, sports and stores/procurement.
What are the general NCS eligibility rules?
- Nigerian citizen by birth or descent.
- Age 18–30 (Customs Assistant trade roles cap at 25).
- Minimum height 1.7 m (male) and 1.64 m (female).
- Fully expanded chest of at least 0.87 m for males.
- Medically and mentally fit, certified by a government medical officer.
- No physical or mental disability that would stop service duties.
- No criminal record and no pending criminal case.
- Not be financially embarrassed (no record of bad debts or insolvency).
- Certificate of state of origin signed by the LGA chairman or secretary. Liaison-officer endorsements are not accepted.
- Valid National Identification Number (NIN).
What academic qualifications does NCS accept?
- SSCE/NECO with credits in at least four subjects including English and Maths.
- Or GCE Ordinary Level with credits in at least four subjects including English and Maths.
- Physically and mentally fit, no criminal record.
- Any certificate not declared at application will not be accepted later. Do not submit more than one application — you will be disqualified.
How do you apply for Nigeria Customs Service recruitment?
When the window opens, the steps are:
- Visit the official portal at recruitment.customs.gov.ng (legacy address: vacancy.customs.gov.ng).
- Create an account using your full name as it appears on your certificates.
- Pick the cadre that matches your highest qualification.
- Fill the form. Dates on the form must match the dates on your certificates.
- Upload scanned credentials, a recent passport photo and your NIN slip.
- Submit and print the acknowledgement slip.
Application fee: Free. NCS does not charge for the form or any stage of recruitment.
Before you apply, have ready:
- An active email address you check daily.
- A verifiable phone number registered with your NIN.
- All required certificates as clean scans.
- Dates on every document must match what you enter on the form.

What happens after you apply?
- Shortlist: NCS publishes shortlisted names on the portal. Check with the email used on the form.
- Aptitude test (CBT): English, Maths, current affairs and general knowledge.
- Physical screening: Height, chest, body mass index, fitness drills and document verification at zonal centres.
- Medical examination: Government hospital health checks.
- Final list and posting: Successful candidates are invited to training depots.
