WAEC grades decide more than your secondary school exit. They open or close doors to JAMB admission, scholarships, and your future course.
This guide breaks down the full grading scale, what each grade means, how universities read your result, and what to do if your scores fall short.
Quick answer: WAEC (WASSCE) grades run from A1 to F9. A1 to C6 are credits, D7 and E8 are passes (not credits), and F9 is a fail. For university admission you need at least five credits — C6 or better — including English Language and Mathematics, in no more than two sittings.
What each WAEC grade means, in one line
- A1 — Excellent, 75–100%. The top grade.
- B2 — Very good, 70–74%.
- B3 — Good, 65–69%.
- C4 — Credit, 60–64%.
- C5 — Credit, 55–59%.
- C6 — Credit, 50–54%. The lowest grade that still counts as a credit, so C6 is good enough for admission, though competitive courses screen for higher.
- D7 — Pass, 45–49%. Not a credit: universities do not accept it for a required subject.
- E8 — Pass, 40–44%. Not a credit.
- F9 — Fail, 0–39%.
The WAEC Grading System Explained
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) grades the WASSCE on a nine-point scale from A1 (highest) to F9 (lowest). Each grade maps to a percentage band and a qualitative interpretation.
WAEC Grade Bands and Interpretation
| Grade | Numeric Value | Score Range | Interpretation |
| A1 | 1 | 75% – 100% | Excellent |
| B2 | 2 | 70% – 74% | Very Good |
| B3 | 3 | 65% – 69% | Good |
| C4 | 4 | 60% – 64% | Credit |
| C5 | 5 | 55% – 59% | Credit |
| C6 | 6 | 50% – 54% | Credit |
| D7 | 7 | 45% – 49% | Pass |
| E8 | 8 | 40% – 44% | Pass |
| F9 | 9 | 0% – 39% | Fail |
A1 to C6 count as credit passes. D7 and E8 are technical passes but most Nigerian universities reject them for core admission subjects. F9 is a fail.

A1–C6 count as credit passes; D7 and E8 are passes most universities reject for required subjects; F9 is a fail. JAMB accepts the five credits in a maximum of two sittings (WAEC and NECO can be combined). Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
WAEC vs WASSCE vs SSCE vs GCE
The four terms get mixed up often. Here is the difference:
- WAEC – the examination body (West African Examinations Council). It runs several exams.
- WASSCE – the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, sat by SS3 school candidates in May/June.
- WAEC GCE – the November/December version for private candidates who already left school or want to upgrade specific subjects.
- SSCE – Senior Secondary Certificate Examination. A generic name covering both WASSCE and equivalent NECO exams.
The grading scale is identical across all of them.
How to Calculate Your WASSCE Result
WAEC marks subjects out of 100 using a 30/70 split: 30% from continuous assessment supplied by your school and 70% from the external paper. Add the two and match the total to the grade band.
1. List Your Raw Subject Scores
Pull your scores from the result slip. Example:
- English Language: 85%
- Mathematics: 70%
- Biology: 69%
- Chemistry: 50%
- Physics: 41%
2. Match Each Score to a Grade
- English Language: 85% = A1
- Mathematics: 70% = B2
- Biology: 69% = B3
- Chemistry: 50% = C6
- Physics: 41% = E8
3. Add the Interpretation
- English Language: A1 (Excellent)
- Mathematics: B2 (Very Good)
- Biology: B3 (Good)
- Chemistry: C6 (Credit)
- Physics: E8 (Pass)
4. Count Distinctions, Credits, and Passes
Most universities ask for at least five credits (C6 or better) including English and Mathematics. For the example above:
- Distinctions (A1–B3): 3
- Credits (C4–C6): 1
- Passes (D7–E8): 1
- Fails (F9): 0
That candidate has four credits or better in core subjects plus a pass in Physics. Strong enough for most non-science programs.
How Many Credits Do You Need For Admission
JAMB sets minimum O’Level credits per course in the UTME brochure. You must score these credits in not more than two sittings (combining WAEC and NECO is allowed). Common requirements:
- Medicine and Surgery – 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
- Law – 5 credits including English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics, Government or History, plus one other.
- Engineering – 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, plus one other science.
- Pharmacy – 5 credits including English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
- Accounting / Business Admin – 5 credits including English, Mathematics, Economics, plus two relevant subjects.
- Arts courses (English, History, Mass Comm) – 5 credits including English, Literature, and three relevant subjects.
Always confirm against the live JAMB Integrated Brochure at ibass.jamb.gov.ng, since some universities add extras.
How O’Level Points Count Toward Your Admission Aggregate
Credits get you past the entry gate. For competitive courses, universities then turn your grades into an aggregate score to rank candidates against each other.
The most common method reuses the Numeric Value column in the table above — 1 for A1 down to 9 for F9 — and adds up your best five relevant subjects. A lower total means a stronger O’Level record, since it takes more distinctions and fewer weak credits to reach it.
How much that O’Level total actually weighs varies by school. Universities like Ibadan and Lagos run a 50:50 aggregate model, splitting your score between JAMB and Post-UTME screening and using O’Level mainly as the credit gate. Others, including Obafemi Awolowo University and several state universities, fold your O’Level points directly into the aggregate formula alongside JAMB and Post-UTME. There is no single national formula — check your target university’s admission portal for its exact weighting before you plan around any general estimate.
How to Check Your WAEC Result Online
You need a WAEC Result Checker PIN and Serial Number. Steps:
- Buy a result checker card or e-PIN. Vendor prices range from ₦3,500 to ₦3,900 depending on seller. The PIN works for one candidate only.
- Go to waecdirect.org.
- Enter your 10-digit Examination Number, Exam Year, and Exam Type (WASSCE School or Private).
- Type the Card PIN and Serial Number.
- Click “Submit” and your result loads.
One PIN allows five free checks for the same candidate. After that you must buy another PIN.
When Are WAEC Results Released
WAEC released the 2026 WASSCE (School Candidates) results on Wednesday 5 August 2026. Of the 1,950,726 candidates who sat, 61.54% earned five credits including English and Mathematics, while 167,486 results (8.59%) were withheld over suspected malpractice — see what a held or withheld WAEC result means. WAEC GCE (Nov/Dec) results usually drop in late January or early February.
Why WAEC Results Matter for Admission
An A1 across the board does not guarantee university entry. You still face the JAMB UTME and, for many schools, a post-UTME screening. Faculties also set their own cut-offs. Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, and Law remain the toughest, often demanding multiple A1s alongside a high JAMB score.
Secrets of Scoring A1 in Every WAEC Subject
Top WASSCE candidates use a small set of habits the rest skip. Steal these:
- Show up and focus in class for the final months. Teachers drop hints about likely topics during revision.
- Take written notes by hand. Writing forces your brain to process the idea, not just see it.
- Build a study timetable and stick to fixed hours. Daily reps beat marathon weekend sessions.
- Drill past questions. WAEC reuses question patterns and even some questions. Past papers expose your weak topics fast. Free JAMB past questions are here if you need them.
- Use mnemonics for lists, formulas, and processes. They work especially well for Biology classifications, Chemistry trends, and Physics constants.
- Form a small study group of three to four serious students. Teaching a topic to a peer cements it in your memory.
- Sleep well the night before each paper. A tired brain misreads questions.
Can You Upgrade Your WAEC Grade? (No.)
Online “WAEC upgrade” services charge a fee to “boost” your grade. Every one of them is a scam. Here is what really happens.
You Will Be Arrested and Prosecuted
WAEC investigates suspicious results. When the Council confirms tampering, both the candidate and the broker face criminal charges under examination malpractice laws.
You Will Be Withdrawn From the University
Universities request your certified result direct from WAEC. If the certified slip differs from the one you submitted, the school will withdraw you, even years after admission. Several Nigerians have lost their degrees this way decades after graduation.
You Will Be Publicly Disgraced
WAEC and the affected university publish names and photos of caught candidates in newspapers and online. That record follows you forever.
Save your money. Resit the failed subjects through WAEC GCE or NECO. A clean retake is cheaper, legal, and accepted by every Nigerian university.
Your Real Options After a D7, E8 or F9
A D7 or E8 is a pass, not a credit — and F9 is a fail. If the affected subject is one your course needs as a credit (English and Mathematics almost always are), these are the routes that actually work:
- Combine two sittings. Many universities accept two sittings of WAEC/NECO results, but competitive courses like Medicine, Law and Nursing usually insist on one sitting. Check the JAMB brochure entry for your exact course before you plan around this.
- WAEC GCE (Second Series). The resit exam for private candidates — you register for only the subjects you need, not all nine. Registration for the 2026 Second Series closed on 31 July 2026, and the exam runs from late October to December 2026, with WAEC moving papers onto computer in phases — objective papers first, at selected centres — rather than all at once (Federal Ministry of Information, 2026). Missed it? Your next WAEC window is the 2027 First Series — WAEC GCE dates and registration details here.
- NECO GCE (Nov/Dec). Universities treat NECO credits exactly like WAEC credits, and its Nov/Dec exam holds 4–21 November 2026 — see the NECO timetable.
Whatever you pick, never touch an “upgrade” service — as the section above explains, those are scams that can cost you the admission entirely.

WAEC Grading System FAQ
What does A1 mean in WAEC?
A1 means Excellent, scored between 75% and 100%. It is the highest WAEC grade and reads as a distinction — the grade competitive courses like Medicine and Law expect in core subjects.
What does B2 mean in WAEC?
B2 means Very Good, scored between 70% and 74%. It counts as a credit pass, so it satisfies admission requirements for any subject.
What does B3 mean in WAEC?
B3 means Good, scored between 65% and 69%. It is a credit pass and is accepted by every Nigerian university and polytechnic.
What does C4 mean in WAEC?
C4 means Credit, scored between 60% and 64%. It counts fully toward the five credits you need for admission.
What does C5 mean in WAEC?
C5 means Credit, scored between 55% and 59%. Like C4 and C6, it meets the credit requirement for university admission.
What does C6 mean in WAEC?
C6 means Credit, scored between 50% and 54%. It is the lowest credit grade — the minimum universities accept for required subjects.
What does D7 mean in WAEC results?
D7 is a weak pass scored between 45% and 49%. It is below the credit threshold (C6, 50%), so most Nigerian universities will not accept it for admission subjects.
What does E8 mean in WAEC?
E8 means Pass, scored between 40% and 44%. It is not a credit, so it does not count toward the five credits universities require. Some polytechnics and Colleges of Education accept it in non-core subjects.
What does F9 mean in WAEC?
F9 means Fail, scored between 0% and 39%. It carries no admission value. Resit the subject through WAEC GCE or NECO — JAMB lets you combine credits from two sittings.
What is the minimum credit requirement for university admission?
JAMB requires at least five credit passes (C6 or better) including English Language and Mathematics, earned in not more than two sittings. Some courses demand specific subjects on top of that.
Can I gain university admission with E8 in a subject?
For most degree programs, no. E8 is a pass on the certificate but does not meet the credit requirement. A few polytechnics and Colleges of Education accept E8 in non-core subjects.
Can I retake just one WAEC subject?
Yes. Register that single subject through WAEC GCE (Nov/Dec) or NECO. JAMB allows results from two sittings to be combined for admission.
When does WAEC release WASSCE results?
WAEC released the 2026 WASSCE results on 5 August 2026 and the 2025 results on 4 August 2025. The window is consistently late July to early August each year.
How much does a WAEC result checker card cost?
WAEC scratch cards and e-PINs sell for around ₦3,500 to ₦3,900 from approved vendors. One PIN checks one candidate’s result up to five times.
What is the difference between WAEC and NECO?
WAEC is run by the West African Examinations Council and accepted across Anglophone West Africa. NECO is the Nigerian National Examinations Council and works only in Nigeria. Both use the same A1 to F9 grading scale, and JAMB accepts results from either body.
Can I print my WAEC certificate online?
No. The waecdirect.org portal only displays your result slip. The original certificate is a physical document collected from your school or directly from a WAEC office months after the result is released.
