What Counts as Passing WAEC

For university admission in Nigeria, you need five credit passes (C6 or better), including English Language and Mathematics, plus three subjects relevant to your course. A C6 sits at 50–54 marks. Aim higher — B3 and above clears most JAMB cut-offs without a re-sit.

The WAEC grading scale runs A1 (75+), B2 (70–74), B3 (65–69), C4 (60–64), C5 (55–59), C6 (50–54), D7 (45–49), E8 (40–44), F9 (below 40). Anything from D7 down does not count as a credit.

12 Steps to Pass WAEC

1. Work From the Official Syllabus

Download the WAEC syllabus for each subject. The syllabus lists every topic that can appear on the paper. If a topic is not in the syllabus, WAEC cannot set a question on it. Tick off each topic as you cover it.

2. Study the Marking Scheme

The marking scheme tells you how examiners share the marks. English Paper 2 essays carry 50 of the 100 marks. In Maths, theory questions weigh more than objectives. Concentrate your study time on the sections that hold the most marks.

3. Drill Ten Years of Past Questions

About 70% of WAEC questions echo themes from previous papers. Work through 2016–2025 past questions under exam conditions. Use the same duration printed on the cover sheet — 2 hours 30 minutes for Maths essay, 1 hour 30 minutes for objectives. Mark your work with the official scheme so you see where you lose marks.

4. Build a Study Timetable That Mirrors the Exam

Map every subject to its exam date. Read the subjects with the earliest dates first. Two-hour study blocks with a 15-minute break work better than five-hour binges. Keep weekends for the heaviest subjects.

5. Tackle Demanding Subjects Daily

Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Literature reward steady practice. One full hour of Maths daily beats six hours once a week. Solve problems with pen and paper, not a phone screen. Reading worked solutions is not the same as solving.

6. Practice Clean Handwriting

Examiners mark hundreds of scripts under deadline. Messy handwriting costs marks even when your answer is right. Write in dark blue or black ink, underline headings with a ruler, and draw one clean line through any cancellation. Stay out of the margin.

7. Build Exam-Day Endurance

Sleep at least seven hours the night before each paper. Eat a light breakfast — bread, eggs, fruit — not heavy jollof. Pack a clear water bottle, two pens, two pencils, an eraser, a sharpener, a non-programmable calculator (where allowed), a clean ruler, your examination slip, and a school ID card. Programmable calculators will be confiscated.

8. Know the Hall Rules Cold

The rules on the question booklet are not suggestions. Sit at the desk number printed on your slip. Switch off your phone and leave it outside the hall. Do not start writing until the supervisor calls “begin”. Stop the second they say “stop”. Never write in the margin.

9. Manage Time Inside the Hall

Spend the first three minutes reading the entire paper. Tick the questions you can answer fast. Start with the easy ones to bank marks and build confidence. Leave hard questions for the second half. Check the wall clock every 20 minutes. Do not answer five questions when only four are required — the examiner marks the first four and ignores the rest.

10. Avoid Examination Malpractice

Anyone caught with leaked papers, written matter on the body, an impersonator, or a phone faces an automatic cancellation of all WAEC papers for that sitting, plus a possible three-year ban from re-sitting. Telegram and WhatsApp “expo” channels are scams. They take your money, send recycled questions, and pass your details to the police. Refuse them.

11. Reread the Instructions for Every Paper

“Answer four questions, two from Section A and two from Section B.” Skim past this and you write the wrong number of answers and lose half the paper. Underline the count of required questions before you start.

12. Pack Your Kit the Night Before

Lay out clothes, slip, ID, pens, pencils, calculator, water, and a snack the night before. Plan your route to the centre. Aim to arrive 30 minutes early. Latecomers past the first 30 minutes are not admitted.
