How to Check Your Airtel Number in Nigeria (7 Easy Ways)

Updated5 November 2026
Reading time5 minutes

To check your Airtel number, dial *121# on your Airtel line, choose My Account, then My Number. Your number shows on the screen in a few seconds. It costs nothing and works with zero airtime and no data. Most guides also list *121*3*4# as a shortcut to the same screen.

One thing to know first. Airtel Nigeria’s own website does not publish a “check my number” code. *121# is the code every guide we checked gives (Legit, TechCabal, Androidpols, 2023–2026), and Airtel users report that it works. Below are seven ways to find your number, fastest first.

What is the code to check your Airtel number?

Dial *121#. This opens Airtel’s self-service menu. Pick My Account (some menus call it Manage My Account), then My Number. Your 11-digit number appears in a pop-up.

The shortcut *121*3*4# jumps through the menu in one go. Menu numbers can change, though. If the shortcut gives an error, dial plain *121# and follow the words on screen, not the numbers.

Airtel numbers usually start with 0701, 0708, 0802, 0808, 0812, 0901, 0902, 0904, 0907, 0911 or 0912. Since number porting began in 2013, a prefix no longer proves the network. Our Nigerian number and network checker lists every prefix.

Methods at a glance

Method What you do Needs data? Speed
*121# menu Dial, pick My Account, then My Number No Under 30 seconds
*121*3*4# Dial the shortcut No Instant if it works
Phone settings Open the SIM or Phone screen No About 30 seconds
Call or text a friend Ring someone nearby No, but needs airtime About 1 minute
SIM pack Read the card the SIM came on No About 1 minute
My Airtel app Log in and check your profile Yes A few minutes the first time
Customer care Call 111 or 300 No A few minutes or more

Method 1: Dial *121# and use the menu (fastest)

  1. Open your phone’s dialler.
  2. Type *121# and press call.
  3. Choose My Account or Manage My Account.
  4. Choose My Number.
  5. Write the number down or screenshot it.

Why it works with no balance: USSD codes run on the network’s signalling channel, not on airtime or data. A SIM with ₦0 can still dial *121#.

Method 2: Try the *121*3*4# shortcut

  1. Type *121*3*4# and press call.
  2. Read the number on screen.
  3. If you get “invalid input” or a different menu, go back to Method 1.

The shortcut only works while option 3 is still My Account and option 4 is still My Number. When Airtel reorders the menu, the shortcut breaks but the menu path still works.

Method 3: Look in your phone settings

On Android: open Settings → About phone → SIM status, or look for a Phone number line on the About phone screen. The wording differs by brand.

On iPhone: open Settings → Phone → My Number.

Do not be surprised by a blank field. Many Nigerian SIMs never have the number written to the card, so this screen shows nothing or “Unknown”. Use *121# when that happens.

Method 4: Call or text a friend

If you have a little airtime, call someone beside you. Your number shows on their phone and they read it back. A short text does the same job if you would rather not talk. This works on a brand-new SIM too.

Method 5: Check your SIM pack

The plastic card your SIM was punched out of often has the number printed on it. Check your bag, drawer or the back of your phone pouch. If you bought a used line or threw the pack away, skip this one.

Method 6: Use the My Airtel app

The official app on Google Play is My Airtel, published by Airtel Africa. Old guides call it “Airtel Thanks”. That name belongs to Airtel’s app in India, so do not download the wrong one.

  1. Install My Airtel and open it.
  2. Enter your number and request the login code (OTP).
  3. Your number shows on your profile or home screen after you log in.

There is a catch. The app asks for your number before it logs you in. If you are not sure of it, the line that receives the OTP text is your line. This method needs data, so it is the slow option.

Method 7: Call Airtel customer care

Dial 111 from your Airtel line. That is Airtel’s own care line, as listed by every guide we checked. You can also dial 300, the customer care number the NCC (Nigerian Communications Commission) set for every network. Ask the agent to confirm your number. Expect a wait in the evenings.

What to do when a code fails

  • “Invalid MMI code” or “invalid input”: you may have mistyped, or the shortcut menu has changed. Dial plain *121# and follow the menu.
  • “Connection problem” or nothing happens: the network is busy. Wait a minute, then redial.
  • Dual-SIM phone: pick the Airtel line before you dial. The code only checks the SIM you dial from.
  • Codes fail on every option: your line may be barred because your NIN is not linked. Dial *996#, the NCC code for checking NIN–SIM linkage, then link at an Airtel shop if needed.
  • Still nothing: restart the phone, move to better signal, and try again. Then call 111 or 300.

Want more than your number? The NCC harmonised short codes work on every network: *310# for airtime balance, *323# for data balance, *312# to buy data, and 3232 for porting. If you plan to buy a social bundle, see our Airtel WhatsApp plans.

Frequently asked questions

What is the code to check my Airtel number in Nigeria?

Dial *121#, choose My Account, then My Number. The shortcut many guides list is *121*3*4#. Airtel does not publish this code on its website, but users report it works.

Can I check my Airtel number with no airtime?

Yes. *121# is a USSD code, and USSD runs on the signalling channel. It works on a SIM with zero balance and no data.

Why does *121*3*4# give me an error?

The shortcut depends on the menu order. When Airtel changes the menu, the numbers shift. Dial *121# on its own and pick the options by name.

Is the Airtel app called Airtel Thanks or My Airtel?

In Nigeria, the Google Play app is My Airtel by Airtel Africa. Airtel Thanks is the Indian app.

Does an 0802 or 0808 number always mean Airtel?

No. People can port their number to another network and keep the prefix. A number like 0802 000 0000 could now sit on any network.

Can I check someone else’s Airtel number?

No. *121# only shows the number of the SIM you dial from. Airtel will not hand out another person’s number.
