WAEC Result Status Meanings: Held, Withheld & Outstanding Explained

Updated29 October 2025
Reading time4 minutes

When WAEC results come out, some students get their results right away. Others see confusing messages like “withheld,” “held,” or “outstanding” when they check online.

Don’t panic if this happens to you. These terms have specific meanings, and understanding them can help you know what to do next.

What Does “Withheld” Mean on Your WAEC Result?

A withheld result means WAEC is holding your results while they investigate possible exam misconduct. This happens when they suspect something went wrong during your exam.

Why WAEC Withholds Results

Suspected Exam Malpractice: If too many students in one exam center get similar grades, WAEC gets suspicious. They think the center might be helping students cheat.

Copying or Cheating: Even if you didn’t cheat, your result can be withheld if someone copied from you or if you copied from someone else.

Impersonation: Some students hire other people (called “mercenaries”) to write their exams. If WAEC catches this, they withhold results.

Noise or Disruption: Talking during the exam, causing trouble, or disturbing other students can get your result withheld.

Answer Sheet Problems: If you fill out your exam number wrong or make your writing hard to read, this can cause issues.

What Does “Held” Mean on Your WAEC Result?

A “held” result is similar to “withheld” but happens for a specific reason. It means an examiner wrote a note about possible cheating or rule-breaking on your answer sheet.

This usually leads to an investigation, just like with withheld results.

What Does “Outstanding” Mean on Your WAEC Result?

An outstanding result means you were marked present for that subject, but your final score isn’t ready yet. This usually happens because:

  • Extra answer sheets weren’t properly attached
  • Your exam number was written wrong
  • Important details on your answer sheet are missing or unclear
  • Your handwriting is too hard to read

Outstanding results often get resolved faster than withheld ones.

What Does “No Result for This Candidate” Mean?

This message appears when:

  • You entered wrong details when checking your result
  • Your entire exam center’s results were cancelled due to widespread cheating
  • Your school is known for exam malpractice and WAEC cancelled all results from that center

Double-check that you entered your exam number and year correctly before assuming the worst.

What Can You Do if Your Result is Withheld or Held?

Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do except wait. Here’s what you should do:

  • Stay in touch with your school or exam center
  • Keep checking the WAEC portal regularly
  • Talk to classmates who have the same problem
  • Be patient – investigations can take several months

Should You Keep Hope Alive?

Yes, if you know your center didn’t cheat and you followed all the rules. Some withheld results do get released after investigation.

However, if WAEC finds evidence of widespread cheating at your center, you might need to retake the exam next year.

How to Avoid These Problems

Follow these tips to prevent result issues:

  • Write your exam number clearly and correctly
  • Don’t talk to anyone during the exam
  • Don’t copy from others or let others copy from you
  • Choose a reputable school or exam center
  • Write legibly – make sure examiners can read your answers
  • Fill out all required information on your answer sheet

Important Reminders

When checking your results online, make sure you enter the correct details. Pay attention to numbers and letters that look similar:

  • Don’t confuse “0” (zero) with “O” (letter O)
  • Don’t mix up “1” (one) with “I” (letter I)
  • Double-check your exam number and year

Many students get the “No Result” message simply because they typed their information wrong.

Final Thoughts

Getting a withheld, held, or outstanding result can be stressful. But understanding what these terms mean helps you know what to expect.

If your result has issues, stay calm and wait for WAEC’s investigation to finish. Keep checking the portal regularly and stay in touch with your school for updates.

Remember, the best way to avoid these problems is to follow all exam rules and choose a good exam center from the start.

All subjects are graded as “HELD” Nine subjects in all. What is the step one can take to redress this situation as there was no indication of examination malpractice or offence at the point of examination? No breach or confrontation with invigilators or examination officers, whatsoever, at the examination venue.
