How to Win Miss and Mr NYSC

Winning Miss NYSC or Mr Macho comes down to three things: confidence on stage, a clear answer in the interview round, and enough practice that none of it rattles you. This guide walks you through how contestants are chosen, how to prepare, the tips that decide the crown, and what happens on the night.

The Miss NYSC and Mr Macho pageant is one of the highlights of the orientation camp. This guide focuses on Miss NYSC, but the same steps work for Mr Macho.

How contestants are selected

Contestants represent their platoon, and each platoon picks its representative its own way. Some nominate a candidate; others ask interested corps members to step forward and then vote. If you want to contest, tell your platoon’s director of socials early — the platoons that plan ahead almost always do better on the night.

How to prepare

Preparation is a team effort, led by the platoon officials and the director of socials. It usually covers:

• Hiring or sewing traditional wear for the cultural round.
• Grooming — hair, skin, and a rehearsed catwalk.
• Coaching on likely interview questions.
• Practising the walk, turns, and poise on a mock stage.

The organisers (the Man O’ War and OBS crews) set the stage, prepare the questions, and handle sound. Your job is to be ready for the walk, the self-introduction, the cultural display, and the questions.

Tips to win Miss NYSC or Mr Macho

1. Practise until it’s automatic. The more you rehearse the walk and your answers, the calmer you’ll be.
2. Own your confidence. Judges reward poise over looks — stand tall, shoulders back, chin level.
3. Make eye contact. Scan the judges, then the audience, then back to the judges. If eyes are hard, look at their foreheads.
4. Smile and enjoy it. A relaxed contestant reads as a confident one.
5. Know your camp facts. Learn the NYSC core values, your camp director’s name, the DG’s name, and the current affairs being discussed in camp.
6. Keep answers short but complete. No one-word replies, no rambling — treat the interview as a conversation, not an interrogation.
7. Ask for a question to be repeated if you don’t understand it. That beats guessing.
8. Don’t compare yourself to other contestants. You’re judged on your own performance.
9. Rest and eat well before the show. Don’t starve yourself — your poise carries you, not your size.
10. Use the bathroom before the interview and before the show.
11. Show personality in both the interview and on stage.
12. Stay positive if you stumble. Competing at all already puts you ahead — finish strong.

What happens on the night

The pageant runs late, usually from about 9–10 p.m., and the hall fills with corps members. After the MC warms up the crowd and the judges are introduced, the show moves through four rounds.

1. The catwalk

Contestants are called out by platoon, line up, then walk, pause, and turn across the stage. This is your first impression — hold your posture.

2. Self-introduction

Each contestant says their name and platoon. Your tone and how you carry it can win the crowd early.

3. Cultural display

Contestants return in traditional attire and perform something cultural — a dance, a song, or an instrument. Prepare one thing and do it well.

4. The question round

This round often decides the winner. You pick a numbered card and answer the question on it. Questions cover NYSC and current affairs, such as:

• What are the core values of NYSC?
• Define one of the core values of NYSC.
• What is the name of your camp director?
• What is the name of the NYSC Director-General?
• What have you done in camp so far?

Answer clearly and confidently, even if you’re unsure — delivery counts as much as the content.
