Gas stations that take Apple Pay

posted on December 31, 2022

Most big U.S. fuel chains take Apple Pay at the pump: Chevron, Texaco, Wawa, Sheetz, Casey’s, Circle K, RaceTrac, Sunoco, ARCO, Maverik, Kwik Trip and Kroger fuel centers all have tap-to-pay readers on most pumps. A few big names only take it inside or through their own app (ExxonMobil, Phillips 66/76/Conoco, Sam’s Club), and Costco pumps mostly do not take it at all. The quick test at any station: look for the contactless symbol (four curved lines) on the pump’s card reader. If it is there, hold your iPhone or Apple Watch to it. If it is not, pay inside or use the chain’s app.

Chain list checked 14 September 2026 against trade press and retailer pages. Pump hardware is upgraded station by station, so treat “yes” as “most locations”.

How to pay for gas with Apple Pay at the pump

  1. Find the contactless symbol on the pump’s card reader. No symbol means no tap; pay inside or use the app.
  2. Press the pump’s “Pay outside” or “Credit” button if it asks, then hold your iPhone or Apple Watch to the reader. On iPhone, double-click the side button first; on Apple Watch, double-click the side button.
  3. Skip the ZIP code prompt if one appears. Apple Pay transactions verify with Face ID or Touch ID, not a ZIP code. Some pumps still ask; entering the ZIP tied to your card works.
  4. Pump your fuel. The pump starts once the card network approves a hold.
  5. Check Wallet. You will see a pending amount first, then the real total once the pump closes the sale.

Why does Apple Pay show a $100 or $175 charge at the pump?

That is a pre-authorization hold, not a charge. Since 2022 Visa and Mastercard let stations hold up to $175 on a card at the pump (it was $125) so the pump knows you can cover a full tank. The hold drops to the real amount once the sale settles, usually within two hours on credit cards and up to a few days on some debit cards. If the hold would empty a debit account, pay inside and ask the cashier to authorize a fixed amount, say $30, on your pump. Source: Kelley Blue Book.

How to find Apple Pay gas stations near you

  • Apple Maps: open a station’s place card. Supported merchants show “Accepts Apple Pay” in the Good to Know section. It tells you the station takes Apple Pay, not always whether the pumps do.
  • GasBuddy: filter station listings by payment method.
  • The chain’s app: Shell, BPme, Exxon Mobil Rewards+, Fuel Forward, Wawa, Sheetz and Casey’s apps all let you start the pump from your phone and pay with Apple Pay in the app, even where the pump has no tap reader. Most also give a few cents off per gallon.

Does Apple Pay work with a Visa gift card or debit card at the pump?

Debit cards work anywhere a credit card works, but the $175 hold hits your bank balance immediately. Prepaid and gift cards usually fail at the pump because the hold exceeds the card balance; pay inside for a fixed amount instead. See our guide to using a Visa gift card on Amazon for how prepaid cards handle holds.

FAQ

Which gas stations do not take Apple Pay at the pump?

Costco (Visa-only pumps, mostly no tap readers), Sam’s Club (QR code through the app instead), Cumberland Farms (SmartPay only at the pump) and Stewart’s Shops (chip-only readers). ExxonMobil and Phillips 66/76/Conoco take it only through their apps.

Does Shell take Apple Pay at the pump?

Most Shell pumps have a contactless reader. Where they do not, open the Shell app, pick your pump and pay with Apple Pay in the app. Fuel Rewards savings apply either way.

Does Costco gas take Apple Pay?

Mostly no at the pump. Costco pumps accept Visa cards (and Costco Shop Cards) and most lack tap readers, so you insert the card. Apple Pay works at the warehouse registers and food court.

Is Apple Pay accepted at ATMs?

Yes, at ATMs with a contactless reader. Add your bank’s debit card to Wallet, hold the phone to the reader and enter your PIN as usual.
