Common Meta Pay Issues and How to Fix Them

August 16, 2026 by genior

What to know

  • A “METAPAY” charge on your card statement is usually a Meta Verified renewal, a Marketplace order, or an in-app purchase — check it under Accounts Center → Meta Pay before calling your bank.
  • Declined payments are most often a billing-address mismatch or your bank blocking Meta. Fix the address, then call the bank.
  • Refunds go back to your original payment method and can take several business days — up to 60 in the worst case.

Instructions apply to the Facebook app and facebook.com as of August 2026. New to the wallet itself? Start with what Meta Pay is and how it works.

Checking a METAPAY charge on a card statement next to the Facebook app

A METAPAY charge you don’t recognize

Meta’s payment system bills under names like METAPAY, META PAY, or FB PAY. Before you dispute anything, find out what the charge actually was:

  1. Open Facebook and tap Menu (your profile picture in the top right).
  2. Tap Settings & privacy → Settings, then See more in Accounts Center.
  3. Tap Meta Pay, then open Transactions and match the amount and date to your statement.

You can also reach the same history on desktop: Menu → Orders and payments → Go to Meta Pay.

The usual culprits, roughly in order of how often they surprise people:

  • Meta Verified — it renews automatically every month on your original purchase date until you cancel.
  • A Marketplace order you checked out on Facebook.
  • An in-app or game purchase, a donation, or a boosted post.
  • A family member using a device where your card is saved.

If none of those match, treat it as unauthorized: change your Facebook password, log out of unknown sessions, remove the card from Meta Pay, and report the transaction from the same Transactions screen.

One warning before you call your bank: a chargeback against Meta can get the payment features on your account — and anything tied to it, like ad accounts — restricted. Try Meta’s own dispute path first. If you do go the card route, US law (the Fair Credit Billing Act) gives you 60 days from the statement date to dispute and caps your liability for unauthorized charges at $50.

Your payment keeps getting declined

Work down this list — the first two fix most declines:

  1. Check that the billing address saved in Meta Pay matches your bank’s records exactly, down to the apartment number.
  2. Call your bank and ask if it is blocking “Meta” or “Facebook” transactions. Fraud filters flag them often.
  3. Confirm the card isn’t expired and has funds with some buffer.
  4. Remove the card from Meta Pay, then add it again — this refreshes the authorization.
  5. Try a different device or network, and update the Facebook app.

Still failing after all five? Our sister site has a deeper walkthrough of every decline scenario: how to fix Meta Pay not working.

“Payments are turned off” on your account

This is a Meta-side restriction, not a card problem. It follows unusual activity, repeated disputes, or a policy flag. Open Accounts Center → Meta Pay and look for a notice explaining the restriction — complete any identity check it asks for, or use the support option on that screen to appeal. Reviews take days, not hours, so don’t re-add cards repeatedly in the meantime; it looks like more unusual activity.

You can’t send money to a friend

Person-to-person payments on Messenger only work in the US, both people must be 18 or older, and the money must come from a debit card or PayPal — credit cards work for shopping, not for sending money. If the option doesn’t appear at all, that’s almost always why. There are also caps on how much you can move; see the current Facebook Pay sending limits.

Outside the US, Messenger transfers aren’t available — use PayPal, Venmo, Wise, or your local equivalent instead.

Your refund hasn’t arrived

  • Refunds return to the payment method you used. Most land within several business days, but banks can take up to 60 days in the worst case.
  • Meta Verified: cancelling stops the next renewal, but Meta does not give partial refunds for the unused part of a billing period. Cancel just before the renewal date if you’re leaving.
  • Marketplace: orders you paid for through Facebook checkout are covered by Purchase Protection — file the claim from the order page. Payments a seller moved off-platform (Zelle, gift cards, cash apps) are not covered, which is exactly why scammers push for them.

Meta Pay is missing from your settings

Meta Pay isn’t available in every country, and checkout features are US-centric. If Accounts Center shows no Meta Pay entry after you’ve updated the app, check on desktop at facebook.com — and if it’s missing there too, the feature simply isn’t offered in your region yet. Nothing on your account is broken.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a METAPAY charge on my card?

Most often a Meta Verified renewal, a Marketplace order, or an in-app purchase. Match the amount against Accounts Center → Meta Pay → Transactions before assuming fraud.

Will a chargeback get my Facebook account restricted?

It can. Meta treats card disputes as a terms violation and may turn off payment features on the account. Use Meta’s own report/dispute option first.

Can I send money with a credit card on Messenger?

No. Person-to-person transfers need a US debit card or a PayPal account. Credit cards only work for purchases.

How long do Meta Pay refunds take?

Several business days is typical. Depending on your bank and payment method, it can stretch to 60 days.

Who do I contact about a Meta Pay problem?

For account and payment issues, use the support option under Accounts Center → Meta Pay. For declined cards, your bank is usually the faster call.
