SHOE SIZE SYSTEMS

There are roughly seven major shoe size systems used around the world, with the US, British, European, and Japanese size systems being the most popular.

Men’s and women’s shoe sizes differ according to the US and British shoe sizing systems. For instance, a men’s 10.5 is a women’s 11.5. Under the US system, sports shoes and sneakers fall under a separate category.

In Europe, shoe makers are expected to adopt the same shoe-size system. However, keep in mind that sizes can vary, for instance, between France and Germany. Additionally, the sizes aren’t entirely uniform, so even though they have the same measurements, shoes made by various manufacturers may come in various sizes.

How can I figure out my shoe size?

  • Put one foot on the paper and the heel of the other foot against the wall.
  • Draw a trace of your foot. Having someone assist you at this stage will simplify the process.
  • Measure the length and width of your outline using your ruler.
  • Put your other foot down and repeat. Note your measurements in millimeters and inches.

Does shoe size translate to inches?

Americans and the British continue to measure the length of shoes in inches rather than metric centimeters. Therefore, shoe sizes can also be measured via inches.

Are shoe sizes and foot lengths the same?

The shoe size is equivalent to the size of the foot in the preferred unit of measurement. It is possible to compare the sizes of various styles of shoes as well as sizes for children, men, and women.
