Register/Create an Instagram Account

July 21, 2026 by Editor Leave a Comment

You can create an Instagram account free in about two minutes — in the Instagram app for iPhone or Android, or in any browser at instagram.com. You need an email address or phone number you can access, and you must be at least 13 years old.

How to Create an Instagram Account in the App

  1. Download Instagram from the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or the Google Play Store (Android), then open it.
  2. Tap Create new account. You can also tap Log in with Facebook to sign up with your Facebook account and skip the steps below.
  3. Enter your email address or phone number, then tap Next. Instagram sends a confirmation code to whichever one you enter — use one only you can access, because it is also how you recover the account later.
  4. Type the confirmation code, then tap Next.
  5. Create a password, then tap Next. Pick one you don’t use anywhere else.
  6. Enter your birthday, then tap Next. Use your real birthday even if the account is for a business or a pet — Instagram uses it to confirm you’re at least 13.
  7. Add your name, then tap Next.
  8. Create a username, then tap Next. If it’s taken, Instagram suggests free variations.
  9. Read the terms, then tap I agree to create the account.
  10. Add a profile picture, or tap Skip and add one later from Edit profile.

How to Create an Instagram Account on a Computer

  1. Go to instagram.com.
  2. Enter your email address, then create a username and password — or click Log in with Facebook to sign up with your Facebook account.
  3. Click Sign up, then enter the confirmation code Instagram emails you.

Accounts made on the web work the same as app accounts — you can post, message, and edit your profile from the browser or the app.

What If Your Instagram Account Is Disabled?

If your account is disabled, you’ll see a message when you try to log in. Accounts that break Meta’s Community Guidelines can be disabled without warning.

If you think it was a mistake, open the app, enter your username and password, and follow the on-screen instructions to ask Instagram to review the decision.

If someone else got into your account, or you can’t log in at all, go to instagram.com/hacked to secure it. If the account was deleted — by you or by someone with your password — it can’t be restored; you can reuse the same email for a new account, but the old username may be gone for good.

Common Sign-Up Problems

  • No confirmation code: check your spam folder, confirm the email or number is typed correctly, then tap Resend code.
  • Username taken: Instagram only allows letters, numbers, full stops, and underscores — add one of those to a taken name, or pick from Instagram’s suggestions.
  • Age error: Instagram blocks sign-ups under 13. If you entered your birthday wrong and got blocked, you’ll have to appeal with an ID.

Once you’re in, set up your profile before you follow anyone — accounts with a photo and a bio get far fewer spam flags.
