NYT Wordle [How to Play and Everything You Need to Know]

Wordle is a daily word game in which participants or players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Feedback for each attempt is provided by colored tiles to signify whether letters are in the correct position. Daily vocabulary is selected by editors utilizing the Oxford Dictionary.

Today, registration or sign-in is unnecessary to play Wordle, as it is available for free to play across all platforms.

However, we advise creating a New York Times account or logging in with an existing account to enable gameplay of Wordle across various devices or platforms while retaining your progress and statistics.

Wordle is an online word game built and developed by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle.

Wardle developed the game for personal enjoyment with his partner and subsequently released it to the public in October 2021. The mechanics resemble those of the 1955 pen-and-paper game Jotto and the television game show franchise Lingo.

The game surged in popularity in December 2021 when Wardle introduced the feature allowing players to post their daily results as emoji squares, which were extensively shared on Twitter (currently known as X).

In January 2022, The New York Times Company acquired Wordle for an undisclosed seven-figure amount and moved it to the games section of The New York Times in February.

How to Play Wordle

Note: Each guess must be a valid five-letter word. Also, the color of a tile will change to show you how close your guess was.

Here is how Wordle works and how to play the game:

Visit the Wordle website or go to the Play tab of the New York Times News app, you will see a 5-wide by 6-long grid of empty, white boxes or tiles. Each box can hold one letter, and so you guess the answer by typing in a five-letter word and tapping ‘Enter’. Answers don’t repeat, check yesterday’s answer to be safe.

No hints are provided up front, hence any five-letter word may serve as a first guess. This is when the game of Wordle truly commences. Upon submitting a guess along, the color of each letter’s box or tile changes.

• If the tile turns green, the letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
• If the tile turns yellow, the letter is in the word but not in the correct spot.
• If the tile turns gray, the letter is not in the word.

When to Play Wordle

It’s very easy to access the Wordle game. You can play Wordle in the Games app for iOS and Android, at nytimes.com/games/wordle, or in the Play tab of the New York Times News app.

About Your Wordle Statistics

Your Wordle progress and stats will automatically link to your New York Times account. To save your statistics, please verify that you are logged into your New York Times account or have signed in with an existing account.

Upon completing a Wordle puzzle, your statistics are displayed on the “Thank you for playing today!” page. Also, you can view your Wordle stats during a game by selecting the bar graph icon at the top right of the page.

Moreover, your Statistics page contains your Wordle stats (Played, Win %, Current Streak, and Max Streak) with an accompanying bar graph of your Guess Distribution.

Please note that if you finish a puzzle after midnight local time, your streak will be broken and a new streak will begin.

How to Share Your Wordle Results

Here is how to share your Wordle results:

1. After solving or playing, Click/tap the Share button at the bottom of the Statistics page (the bar graph icon).
2. Now, depending on the device you are using to play Wordle, you will see a range of options you can use to share your results or you will see a message indicating that you Copied results to clipboard.
3. After the results are copied to your device’s clipboard, you can paste your Wordle results into any text field to share (e.g. Twitter (currently known as X), Facebook, email, text message, etc.).

About Wordle Archive

The newly developed Wordle archive permits All Access and Games Subscribers to play the full archive of Wordle puzzles from as far back as June 19th, 2021. This includes numerous Wordles before The New York Times’ acquisition and curation of the game in November 2022.

It’s important to know that playing Wordle puzzles in the archive does not affect your Wordle Stats and streaks.

Subscribers can access the Wordle archive: On a web browser at nytimes.com/crosswords via the navigation menu or in the Wordle Archive section in the Games app.

Please note that the archive is not available in the Play tab of the News app.

Note: If you do not have your Wordle stats linked to a New York Times account your progress on archived Wordles will not be saved. Your progress on archived Wordles will be saved from the date your account is linked and thereafter.

There is no incorrect method to play Wordle. The allure of the game lies in its simplicity.

Your attempts to input a nonsensical arrangement of letters instead of an actual word will be thwarted; each guess is verified against Wordle’s dictionary. If your guess is not a real word, the game prohibits its submission.

Simply attempt it and evaluate the results personally. Once you have contracted the enthusiasm, it is challenging to refrain from returning for additional experiences.
