How to Delete Snapchat Messages (4 Simple Steps/Guide)

To delete a Snapchat message: open the chat, long-press the message you want gone, tap Delete, then tap Delete again to confirm. The message disappears for everyone, but Snapchat tells your friend that a message was deleted (a small grey “deleted a chat” tag in the thread). Delete a single Snapchat message (text, emoji, or snap)

1. Open Snapchat. Swipe right from the camera screen to open Chat.
2. Tap the conversation with the friend whose message you want to remove.
3. Press and hold the message until a menu pops up.
4. Tap Delete, then tap Delete again to confirm.

Works whether the message has been viewed or not. After deletion, both you and your friend see a small grey notice in the chat that reads “[Your name] deleted a chat.” You can’t delete messages other people sent you — only ones you sent.

Clear an entire conversation

Clearing a conversation removes the chat from your messages list but does not delete it from the other person’s account.

1. Tap your Bitmoji or profile icon in the top-left corner.
2. Tap the ⚙️ Settings gear in the upper-right.
3. Scroll to Privacy Controls → Clear Data → Clear Conversations.
4. Tap the ✖️ next to a name to clear that conversation. Confirm with Clear.

Saved messages with a grey background remain saved on the other side. Unsave them first if you want them gone (see below).

Delete a message before the recipient opens it

Same flow as deleting any sent message — long-press → Delete → confirm. If you act fast (before the recipient opens the chat), they may never see the original message at all. They’ll still see the grey “deleted a chat” notice.

Delete a saved Snapchat message

Saved messages — the ones with a grey background you tapped to keep — don’t disappear with normal chat clearing. To remove them:

1. Open the chat that holds the saved message.
2. Long-press the saved message.
3. Tap Unsave in Chat.

If your friend also saved the message, your unsaving only removes it from your side. The other person has to unsave it on their end to fully delete it.
