How to Cancel CenturyLink

July 29, 2026 by genior

To cancel CenturyLink home service, call 800-244-1111 (residential, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) or sign in to your My CenturyLink account and look for the cancel option. First, check who actually serves your address. CenturyLink’s consumer business is now Lumen and Quantum Fiber, and in many former-CenturyLink areas service moved to Brightspeed. If you are a Brightspeed customer, you cancel through Brightspeed instead. Give about 30 days’ notice and return any leased equipment within 30 days to avoid a fee.

Cancel Century Link

CenturyLink provides home internet, phone, and TV service and traces its roots to 1930, with headquarters in Monroe, Louisiana. The brand has shifted in recent years, which changes how you cancel. Read the next section first so you call the right company.

Who serves your address now: CenturyLink, Quantum Fiber, or Brightspeed?

The CenturyLink consumer business sits under Lumen Technologies, alongside Quantum Fiber, its fiber-internet brand. In many former-CenturyLink regions, the network was sold to Brightspeed, a separate company. If you live in one of those areas, your account is now a Brightspeed account, and CenturyLink can’t cancel it for you.

Check before you call:

  • Look at your most recent bill. The company name at the top tells you who to contact.
  • Sign in at the site where you pay. A Brightspeed login means you cancel through Brightspeed.
  • If unsure, call CenturyLink at 800-244-1111 and ask whether your address transferred to Brightspeed.

How do you cancel CenturyLink?

Use one of these two methods.

Method 1: Cancel by phone

  1. Call 800-244-1111 for residential service, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Business accounts use 1-877-348-9003.
  2. Say you want to cancel your service and give your account number and service address.
  3. Expect a retention offer. Decide beforehand whether you are firm on canceling.
  4. Ask for a confirmation number and the date service ends.

Method 2: Cancel online

  1. Sign in to your My CenturyLink account.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the home page.
  3. If your account is eligible, you’ll see an option to cancel service. Click it and follow the prompts.
  4. If no cancel option appears, your account type needs a phone call instead.

How do you cancel Brightspeed (former CenturyLink areas)?

If your service transferred to Brightspeed, cancel with Brightspeed:

  1. Call 833-692-7773 to close your account, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (The general support line is 833-964-4327.)
  2. Say you want to cancel and give your account number and service address.
  3. Ask for a confirmation number and your service-end date.
  4. Get return instructions for any leased modem or router.

How much notice does CenturyLink need?

Give about 30 days’ notice to avoid a service gap and to make sure final charges are correct. CenturyLink home internet has no annual contract and no early termination fee, so you can cancel any time. Older contracts or bundles may differ, so confirm your terms when you call.

What equipment do you return, and when?

Return any leased modem, router, or set-top box within 30 days of canceling to avoid an equipment charge of up to $200 per item.

  • Ask for return instructions during your call or chat.
  • Pack the gear in its original box, or a similar-sized box.
  • Ship it back with the prepaid label, usually droppable at a UPS or FedEx location.
  • Keep the tracking number as proof you returned it.

What about TV, satellite, or wireless service?

These are billed by other companies, so cancel them separately:

  • DIRECTV or DISH satellite TV: contact the provider directly.
  • Verizon wireless: call 1-800-922-0204, Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. local time, or weekends 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

How do you avoid common problems?

  • Confirm your provider first so you don’t waste a call on the wrong company.
  • Record the details: date, time, agent name, and confirmation number.
  • Return equipment on time to skip the up-to-$200 charge.
  • Check your final bill for unused service days and any equipment fees, then pay it promptly so it doesn’t hit your credit.
  • Moving? Ask about transferring service to your new address instead of canceling.
