Improve Studying for WAEC Examination

Learning How to develop a good study habit can be one of the best investments of your time in terms of preparing for this year’s WAEC Examination and also improving your grades.  The best part is that anyone who truly wants to improve their learning process can do so by following a few basic principles of time management, organization and prioritization.

In this post, we are going to discuss with you, the effective tools and study habits for students that want to pass this year’s WAEC Examination.

1. Find a study group

Remember the old saying “two heads are better than one, three heads are better than two…” Well, finding the right people to study with will help you a lot when preparing for your upcoming 2021 WAEC Exams.

You’ll be able to cover a wide range of topics across all subjects in a very short period of time provided your study group is very serious with their academics. You’ll also be able to practice your past questions together, review your mistakes, and set targets ahead of the next subject. It’s always fun after a while.

2. Create a specific time and place to study

This can make all the difference most especially with the right study group. Creating the perfect place and time to study minimizes the stress of reading as students who don’t practice this technique tend to be more stressed about where to read because they are never sure of how or what they are going to study.  This could however impact your decision to not to study at all rendering you lazy since you can’t seem to find a quiet place to calm your head and read.

3. Set your mood

Only you know what works best for you.  Do you do read better with slow music, or are you the type that prefers to chew while reading?  Do you assimilate better during the day, or maybe you’re a night crawler type that reads best at midnight?  No matter what “mood”, the most important thing is that you are honest with yourself and work to maximize efficiency.

4. Read like an actual student

Most student’s approach to reading is the same old fashioned method. Open the textbook to Chapter 1, and read till the end of the chapter.  Usually, by the time they get to the end of chapter 1, their retention and comprehension is now very low.  In order to answer the exercise questions, they will have to go back and re-read the entire chapter again, scanning for answers.

Why not try this method instead; Turn to the end of the chapter and read the chapter summary very well, then read all of the exercise questions.  Now go back and read the entire chapter from the beginning.  Believe me, your understanding of the chapter and the retention of some key information will be way better this time!

5. Don’t CRAM

A lot of students resolve to cramming past questions and answers before an examination. What they fail to realize is that cramming before an exam could inhibit their memory, causing them to forget every other thing they’ve read for that subject just because they failed to remember a word or a line that they crammed.

Applying the above techniques on a consistent and steady routine will more than prepare you for your WAEC Exams.  You should only need to review your notes for the subject a few times before an exam.  In other words, if you apply these steps, you should not need to cram!

6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Remember this Chinese proverb “He who asks a question is a fool for five (5) minutes but he who doesn’t is a fool forever…”

It’s only normal for even the brightest students to struggle with one subject or topic while preparing for their WAEC Exams. Either the textbook is too big or the math is too advanced or the teacher can’t teach. Regardless of the condition, don’t let the frustration, anger or fear of failure stop you from asking for help.

Ask questions to topics you don’t understand, or need help with; most especially the core subjects that will always come out in the Theory section if you are really determined to pass.
