WHY YOU NEED TO BE ICT LITERATE BEFORE PASSING OUT FROM NYSC
During my service year I was shocked to learn that a few Corp members don’t know how to use computer.
While some might belittle it and see no reason to make an issue on that I sincerely think it is way out of reasoning for a Nigerian graduate not to be computer literate in a technological age.
Then let me also push this funny note here. Knowing how to press Whatsapp, facebook, twitter and the rest doesn’t make you a computer illiterate
In fact owing a computer doesn’t even make you a computer literate. Surprisingly but that’s true. Some think they know all about computer because they have a computer, they can surf the net and can pretty a lot of things with their computer but they soon learn that they don’t know a lot when they go for a real computer class. It happened to me so I know what I’m really saying.
So here now let me point to you some reasons why you need to be ICT literate before passing out from NYSC.
Pre-University CBT Exams
The world and the society at large are becoming computerized day by day. Schools are gradually moving online.
A lot of pre-university schools are using computer to ease their work. Recently, I remember a junior secondary school in my area where parents are expected to pay their wards fees online.
Just imagine it even prospective students to the University writes Jamb to using computer based testing. Is it not shameful if you as a graduate cannot use one?
Today, gaining jobs is now online. A lot of the ways to gain jobs involves the use of the computer and the internet. CV’s and resumes are submitted online. Job sites expect you to upload your CV online. Hiring mangers demand you send your CV’s to their email.
Having connections has always be the easy way to get jobs. Today, unlike in the past networking for jobs are now done online. To connect to people in your profession you need to find them online.
Social media has made it the easiest way to meet a lot of people at a short distance time.
According to statistics more 80% of employers can be found online. Interestingly they also search profiles of people they intend to hire online. They do this to have a background knowledge about the prospective employee and if he would suitable for the position.
Candidates who do not have online profiles or are not active on the internet media are mostly presumed to be non-social persons.
With the ease of online networking job seekers can connect with professionals in their field, communicate with hiring managers and ask them to notify them of job openings.
How can you accomplish all these without being a computer literate as a graduate or after passing out from NYSC? Unless you want to spend extra months at home learning computer while your mates are vigorously searching for the scanty jobs available anyway.
Today as a lot of things are turning towards the internet, there are also a lot jobs one can do online. In fact you can work from the comfort of your home doing online jobs.
At least these online jobs can serve you some income in the meanwhile while you are looking for a job, which is if you are bent on getting employed.
Most of these online jobs can pay you well while giving you enough time to do other things in your life.
While at the Job
If you get to find a job eventually that calls shout of joy obviously. At the same time a lot of office jobs today most often have computer related task.
It would be quite embarrassing to find yourself under performing at the job place because of computer illiteracy. It could also be disquieting to be bogging others all the time to do things for you because it involves the use of computer.
Seriously, if you are not a computer literate while at your NYSC then don’t pass out without finding a computer center near you and learn. Computer centers are virtually anywhere this days even in thick villages.
If still you can’t find one, surely there would be Corp members who are computer literates you could beg them or negotiate properly with them for them to teach you.
