The Latest News On Nigerian Peace Corps Bill Today

As earlier said, In 2017, President Buhari refused to assent to the bill of the Nigerian peace corps. His two major reasons for rejecting the PCN establishment bill were that Nigeria doesn’t have enough money for the maintenance of the corps, coupled with the duplication of functions by the other service men. Hence, since that period till now, the Nigeria peace corps has been operating without any constitutional or legal backing.

However, on 24th July 2019, the House of Reps reintroduced the amended peace corps bill again for passage. The motion for the introduction of the bill was moved by the chief whip of the House, in the person of Honourable Mohammed Tahir. Haven been reintroduced, the PCN bill has already passed its first reading on 3rd of July 2019, with the second reading expected to come up anytime soon.

It should be stated categorically here that all the reasons that Buhari advanced for rejecting the peace corps establishment bill has all been addressed in the new bill. A provision has been made for additional funding of the corps. Also, the new bill made it clear that non of the functions of the PCN will overlap with the functions of other security agencies in Nigeria. If you ask me, i will tell you that this is a welcome development for the scheme and its members, as it has offered a new hope for the future.

It must be stated here that the essence of this PCN bill is to give a legal backing to the operations of the Peace Corps of Nigeria.
