To get a JPG or PNG instead, you have three options: install a convert-on-save extension and pick the format from the right-click menu, open the saved .webp in Paint (Windows) or Preview (Mac) and export it, or run the file through a free converter like Squoosh. Each takes under a minute. One warning first: the best-known extension for this job, &#8220;Save image as Type&#8221;, was hijacked and turned into adware \u2014 Google removed it in March 2026. Smaller files mean faster pages, so most large sites converted their images. Chrome&#8217;s <strong>Save image as\u2026<\/strong> dialog keeps whatever format the site sent. There is no Chrome setting to change that, and typing a .jpg extension in the save dialog only renames the file \u2014 the data inside is still WebP, and some apps will still refuse to open it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"extension\">Method 1: A convert-on-save extension (fastest)<\/h2>\n<p>An extension converts the image at the moment you save it, so there is no second step. It saves any image \u2014 WebP, JPG, PNG, even SVG \u2014 as PNG, JPG, or WebP, and every conversion happens on your device \u2014 the image is never uploaded anywhere, and there are no ads, accounts, or analytics.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/chromewebstore.google.com\/detail\/egegbnooedclkfckollmdancfhpbglib\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Local Image Saver on the Chrome Web Store<\/a> and click <strong>Add to Chrome<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click any image and choose <strong>Save image as\u2026 (PNG \/ JPG \/ WebP)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Pick <strong>PNG<\/strong> or <strong>JPG<\/strong>. The converted file lands in your Downloads folder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/awajis.com\/howto\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/local-image-saver-right-click-menu.webp\" alt=\"Chrome right-click menu with the Local Image Saver option: Save image as PNG, JPG, or WebP\" width=\"1280\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pick <strong>Original<\/strong> when you want the untouched file. It works in every direction, too \u2014 a heavy PNG saves as a compact WebP just as easily. The settings page lets you set JPG\/WebP quality and a filename pattern. On your first save it asks for site access \u2014 that permission is what lets it read images that sit on a different server than the page (most do), and you can decline or remove it anytime from the settings page.<\/p>\n<p><em>Disclosure: Local Image Saver is built by us, the Awajis team. Convert it with an app your computer ships with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Windows (Paint):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click the .webp file \u2192 <strong>Open with<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Paint<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>File<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Save as<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>JPEG picture<\/strong> or <strong>PNG picture<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Pick a folder and click <strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Mac (Preview):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Double-click the .webp file \u2014 it opens in Preview.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>File<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Export\u2026<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>JPEG<\/strong> or <strong>PNG<\/strong> in the Format menu and click <strong>Save<\/strong>. If the format you want isn&#8217;t listed, hold <strong>Option<\/strong> while clicking the Format menu to reveal the full list.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Fine for the occasional file. It gets old fast if you save images every day \u2014 that&#8217;s what the extension is for.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"online\">Method 3: An online converter (big batches)<\/h2>\n<p>For a pile of files, or when you also want to resize or compress, use <a href=\"https:\/\/squoosh.app\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Squoosh<\/a> \u2014 a free tool from the Chrome team. It runs in the browser and processes images on your device, so your files stay private. Drag a file in, pick <strong>MozJPEG<\/strong> (for JPG) or <strong>OxiPNG<\/strong> (for PNG) in the bottom-right panel, and click the download button.<\/p>\n<p>Sites like CloudConvert handle bigger batches in one go, but they upload your files to their servers \u2014 skip them for anything private.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"which\">Which method should you use?<\/h2>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Situation<\/th>\n<th>Best method<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>You save images regularly<\/td>\n<td>The extension \u2014 one right-click, done<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>One file, once in a while<\/td>\n<td>Paint (Windows) or Preview (Mac)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Many files, or you want resizing too<\/td>\n<td>Squoosh<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2 id=\"save-image-as-type\">Is &#8220;Save image as Type&#8221; safe?<\/h2>\n<p>No \u2014 do not install it. It was the most popular extension for this job, with over 1 million users, until its new owners turned it into adware. A group called Karma acquired it from the original developer in November 2025 and added hidden code that hijacked shopping traffic on sites like Amazon to steal affiliate commissions. Google removed it from the Chrome Web Store in March 2026 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghacks.net\/2026\/03\/19\/chrome-extension-save-image-as-type-was-hijacked-putting-over-1-million-users-at-risk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gHacks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2026\/03\/16\/image-saving-chrome-extension-removed-as-malware\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">9to5Google<\/a>). If it&#8217;s still in your browser, remove it now: <code>chrome:\/\/extensions<\/code> \u2192 Remove.<\/p>\n<p>Extensions change owners quietly, so check who runs one before installing it \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/awajis.com\/howto\/facebook-friends-mapper-extension\/\">Facebook Friends Mapper extension<\/a> is another one that had to be pulled. Prefer tools that state exactly what they do with your data.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"problems\">Common problems<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Transparent image gets a black or white background as JPG.<\/strong> JPG doesn&#8217;t support transparency, so the transparent area must be filled. Save as PNG instead to keep it. (Local Image Saver fills with white rather than black.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Animated WebP or GIF turns into a still image.<\/strong> Converting keeps only the first frame. Use the Original option to keep the animation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The image won&#8217;t save from a protected site.<\/strong> Some sites block direct image downloads. The extension retries through the page itself, which usually works; failing that, an old-fashioned screenshot does the job.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You renamed .webp to .jpg and it still won&#8217;t open.<\/strong> Renaming doesn&#8217;t convert.
