Denzel Washington’s Early Life
Denzel Washington was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York, to Denzel Hayes Washington, Sr. and Lennis ‘Lynne’ Washington.
His parents divorced when he was a teenager and Denzel was sent to Oakland Military Academy in New Windsor, New York.
Denzel attended Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida.
After graduating, Denzel attended Texas Tech University, but didn’t stay.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in drama and journalism from Fordham University in 1977.
Denzel later enrolled at the Lincoln Center campus to study acting.
From there he landed a role in The Emperor Jones and Othello and decided to go on to graduate school at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, California.

Denzel Washington’s career took flight in the 1990s with several popular and highly acclaimed films.
In 1981, he appeared in his first feature film, “A Carbon Copy,” and the following year landed a role on the medical drama, “St. Elsewhere,” where he remained until 1988.
In the 1990s, Washington’s film credits include lauded performances in “Glory” (1989), “Malcolm X” (1992), “Philadelphia” (1993), “Crimson Tide” (1995), “Devil in the Blue Dress” (1995), “Courage Under Fire” (1996), “He Got Game” (1998), “The Siege” (1998), “The Bone Collector” (1999) and “The Hurricane” (1999).
In 2001, he got an Oscar for best actor for his role in “Training Day.”
He has slowed down since then, with “Antoine Fisher,” “Inside Man” and “Unstoppable” in the 2000s, and “Flight” in 2012 and “The Equalizer” in 2014.
In 2016, Washington starred with Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo in the remake of the classic western, “The Magnificent Seven.”
That same year, he directed and produced a film adaptation of the play, “Fences,” starring himself and Viola Davis as the lead characters.

Washington directed Antwone Fisher in 2002, and he has since directed The Great Debaters (2007) and Fences (2016). He has also produced a number of films, including The Book of Eli and The Equalizer, as well as a number of television shows.

In 2005, Washington received the BET Humanitarian Award.

Denzel Washington’s Personal Life
Denzel’s first film, the made-for-television sports drama Wilma, provided him with more than just a break in his career; he also met his wife while working on the set. In 1983, he married Pauletta Pearson, with whom he had four children.
Washington, a devout Christian, has considered becoming a preacher, even considering quitting acting to pursue a career in the church. Fortunately for his fans, he has decided to remain in Hollywood, but he claims to still read the Bible every day.
In 2006, the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces requested assistance from a group of American artists and intellectuals that included Denzel Washington, Oliver Stone, and Michael Moore. They pleaded with the group to assist in persuading then-President George W. Bush to release 600 imprisoned rebels in exchange for 62 hostages held in Colombia.
Denzel Washington hasn’t just kept his fame and large paychecks to himself; he has also given his financial and personal support to a number of deserving organizations. He has been the Boys & Girls Club of America’s spokesperson since 1993 and a member of its board of directors since 1995.
