INTRODUCTION

    Engineering affects every aspect of human activity – work, leisure, health and education. Engineers are involved in the design and manufacture of almost everything, from cars to computers, from web pages to wings, from microchips to motorways. Many recent medical advances have been made as a result of work done by engineers, ranging from brain scanners to the drug dispensers used by asthma sufferers.
    Engineering degrees can lead to a vast number of career opportunities, with graduates in demand in almost every sector of the economy.
    Along with doctors and lawyers, engineers are professionals who have a lot of prestige.

DEFINITION

    Engineering is the creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design. Engineer is one who is licensed to practice engineering.

    CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

        Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that uses the physical sciences (e.g. chemistry and physics), with mathematics, to convert raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms. In addition to producing useful materials, chemical engineering is also concerned with introducing valuable new materials and techniques as well as research and development. A person employed in this field is called a chemical engineer.

    This is between four (4) to five (5) years.

    POST GRADUATE DEGREES AND PROFESSIONAL

      Post Graduate Diploma (PGD): A postgraduate diploma is a qualification awarded typically after a bachelor’s degree.
      Master’s degree (MA): A master’s degree is an academic degree granted to individuals who have undergone study demonstrating a mastery or high-order overview of a specific field of study or area of professional practice.
      Doctor of Philosophy: Abbreviated Ph.D., for the Latin philosophiæ doctor, meaning “teacher of philosophy”. This is an advanced academic degree awarded by universities. It is the highest degree one can earn. The major requirement is the possession of a Master’s degree.

    ENGINEERING BODIES IN NIGERIA

      There are two (2) important Engineering bodies in Nigeria; NSE and COREN. The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) is a voluntary association established by the practitioners of the profession while the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) is a statutory organ of Federal Government, established by decree and concerned with certificate of persons for the purpose of practicing the engineering profession in Nigeria.
      Every engineer is expected to register with these bodies. Post graduate programs are available in the federal and state universities of the country.
